Walking on the Sun - Horizon Harnesses Solar Power

Horizon Signs has worked closely with the market leader in outdoor advertising, to develop an innovative, energy saving, solar powered bus stop.

This looks like a standard bus stop but it has a solar panel head fitted to the top of it. In the solar head there are batteries which store the solar energy generated during the day to power the LEDs at night, lighting up the bus stop flag and the timetable at the push of a button.

This extra lighting will allow passengers to easily read the timetable, which is especially useful with winter approaching and the nights drawing in earlier. We know that many councils are trying to cut down on the use of street lamps due to energy costs, this solution would assure those travelling on public transport that they would not be left in the dark and the bus stops would be clearly visible to drivers.

Our Mercury Solar bus stop provides a significantly cheaper solution for local authorities in comparison to the work and cost involved with creating a grid connection from the mains electricity for bus stop lighting, which is not even an option for many rural areas.

The Mercury Solar bus stops are being rolled out on a current installation program and Horizon is also currently in the process of designing a retro fit bus shelter with LED solar powered lights.

Ross Ball, Director at Horizon Signs, said: “With the cost of energy rising considerably over the last year, councils are aiming to cut their spending and are, as a result, switching off street lamps. Our solar powered bus stop will allow passengers to check timetables and will provide a sense of comfort when travelling in these areas at night.”
